This interview with Tim McNamara took place in his quirky New York City sublet in October 2014 while he was a visiting scholar at Teachers College, Columbia University. I then spent three days with him in October 2019, when we were attending a conference at the University of Grenoble Alpes. I fact-checked the interview with Tim. Then, Tim and I did what we always did, talked and laughed and ate, and in our own ways solved the world’s problems. Tim was ill then, but in good spirits. I knew then that this would be the last time I saw him in person, and it was very sad, but we got to tearfully say good-bye. Putting the final touches on the interview, I realized that any interview (or test for that matter) is a cross-section of accumulated understandings. This interview is no different. I also realized that over time, working through the muddle we all carry, we can evolve. This was on display in this interview. The true power of an interview lies in the immediate exigencies of reflection, elaboration, clarification, communication, and the ensuing potential for and the magic of transformation. I promised Tim I’d get out the interview; he was not worried.
